Kevin Lewis
A lecturer on silent film comedies at Sandhills Community College in the Continuing Education Lifelong Learning programs, Kevin Lewis is this summer’s choice for our annual Best of Sandhills gallery exhibit.
Born in New York City in 1949, Kevin’s father was a trust officer and vice president of Morgan Guaranty Trust, now JP Morgan Chase, and his mother, a mathematics teacher. Kevin followed his graduation from Cheshire Academy with a stint at Franklin and Marshall College, where he earned his B.A. in history.
Soon after, he worked as a stage technician in regional theater and was Assistant to the Executive Director of the Fort Bragg Playhouse of the US Army. For ten years, he was a curator of exhibitions at the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum and for the Museum of the Performing Arts, New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, and he gained his foothold as a journalist writing for local publications. It was during that time, that Kevin became special projects coordinator for The Shubert Archive, the artifacts of the Shubert Theater empire, and The American Theatre Wing.
Kevin’s focus shifted to journalism in the 1980s. He was a feature writer for The Fayetteville Observer for eight years, followed by lifestyles editor of The Sandhills Citizen.
However, it is as a film aficionado that Kevin found his greatest success as a journalist/historian. For twenty years, he was a features reporter for DGA Magazine and the Motion Pictures Editors Guild, and, for four years, he was editor of Dance Pages, also known as Dance and the Arts.
Over the last 40 years, he has also published commercial and academic articles in
- Films in Review
- Film History
- Irish America
- Irish Voice
- International Documentary Magazine
- Writers Guild East
- Backstage
In the academic realm, he is a co-author of The Critical Edition of Body and Soul, commissioned by California State University, Northridge.
Sandhills Community College is pleased to feature this exhibit of Mr. Lewis’ work—a journalistic career spent “among the stars.” Kevin was also curator for the Something for the Boys: Trouping in the Wars commemorative exhibit in the Hastings Gallery. Lewis’ journalism extended beyond the silver screen. He served as a senior editor of Dance Pages, a mass-market dance trade magazine. His archives of the now defunct publication is in the archives of the American Dance Festival at Duke University.
